T-Mobile to kill Even More Plus plans, bringing “Value” and “Classic”?

T-Mobile's Even More Plus plans have quietly disappeared from T-Mo's website back in November last year, and that was the first time one could know that a change was on its way. And now, it's closer than ever as TmoNews got some inside information about the “Value” and “Classic” plans coming to replace Even More Plus. Customers on current plans however won't be affected by the change and can continue using their existing plan.

Simply put, the “Value” option is to be very similar to Even More Plus, with even more savings promised, but one crucial difference – a contract agreement will now be required. “Classic” plans on their part will be much like the current Even More option.

For Value plans, you can pick between 200MB for $5, 2GB for $10, 3GB for $15, 5GB for $25 or 10GB costing you $55, but no web features are required. Additionally, you can bundle the plan with unlimited texts for $5 monthly. Value plans also have 21-month Equipment Installment Plan for the full price of equipment. The new rate plans are detailed below:

1000 minutes for $49.99, $5 to add a line

2000 minutes for $59.99, $5 to add a line

Unlimited plan to which you can add a line with 500 minutes for $5, or $20 for unlimited minutes

Other peculiarities of the plans, are the fact that once in a Value plan you can't go back to Classic, while migrating the other way around to Value could cost you from $0 to $200. Folks over at TmoNews warn us to take this with a grain of salt as it's far from confirmed, but a change is certainly on the way so stay tuned.

T-Mobile announces myTouch 4G Slide with launch set for July

T-Mobile officially introduced the myTouch 4G Slide, which, right off the bat, you can see will offer some tough competition for the Motorola DROID 3. The myTouch 4G Slide has a 3.7 inch WVGA Super LCD display with a 4 row QWERTY keyboard that slides out in landscape orientation. A 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor is under the hood.

Manufactured by HTC, of course, the handset offers Sense 3.0 on top of Android 2.3. Netflix is pre-installed on the phone, as well as Swype and Qik mobile video chat. T-Mobile has some pre-installed apps on board like T-Mobile TV and T-Mobile KidZone. The Genius button is back with support from Nuance's Dragon Dictation, to take your verbal commands and Bobsled's Group Text allows you to send out SMS messages to groups of friends.

The 8MP rear camera comes with AF, dual LED flash and offers ClearShot HDR so you can take sharp pictures in bright settings. BurstShot allows you to take a "burst" of photos quickly so you can grab that perfect shot. T-Mobile also says that the rear camera has "Zero shutter lag" allowing you to press the shutter and take a picture instantly. And with a wide f/2.2 aperture lens and a backside illuminated sensor, pictures can be taken under low light conditions. Video can be captured at 1080p.

The T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide is expected to launch next month in black or kakhi; pricing of the unit was not disclosed.

T-Mobile expands its HSPA+ footprint to an additional 7 markets

With the recent announcement of the upcoming T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide, there are actually seven new markets that will be especially thrilled to know that T-Mobile is giving the green lights to its ever expanding HSPA+ network.

Although the photo taking centric Android smartphone is indeed getting a lot more face time than anything else, the carrier actually announced in the same press release that they’re expanding their HSPA+ network to seven new markets. The latest members include markets like Chico, California; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Ogden, Utah; Redding, California; Vineland, NJ; and Winchester, VA.

Therefore, if you happen to live in any of those cities, you can freely continue thinking about purchasing the upcoming T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide knowing that you’ll be able to make use of that awesome and speedy HSPA+ network.

T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide now official, to hit stores in July

After several leaks T-Mobile has finally listed the myTouch 4G Slide on its US site as a coming soon handset. The HTC-made handset will be available for as low as $199.99 on a two-year bond with "America's largest 4G network", starting next month. There are no specifics on the required monthly fee just yet or any mentions of a potential SIM-free deal.

The phone will be offered in two color versions - white and "khaki" (meaning a beige spinoff) and will be exclusively offered by T-Mobile.

The myTouch 4G Slide is joining the already pretty large family of droids on the T-Mobile shelves. Its myTouch 4G keyboard-less brother and myTouch 3G Slide predecessors were quite popular so expectations for this one will be high too.

The myTouch4G Slide brings along a 3.7" S-LCD display, the latest Android meant for smartphones, Gingerbread 2.3, a dual-core Snapdragon processor, FullHD 1080p video recording and an 8 MP camera. T-Mobile were keen to brag that the myTouch 4G Slide camera packs an ultra bright f/2.2 lens, just like the Nokia N9, which should benefit its low-light performance.

Naturally the smartphone also offers HSPA+ support, meaning downlink speeds of up to 21 Mbps and uplink of 5.76 Mbps. Oh and a full physical QWERTY keyboard, which slides out from its body.

With a specs sheet like that the myTouch 4G will surely be a great catch for Android enthusiasts with a thing for texting.

T-Mobile launches $4000 a day trivia game, plus the weekly chance to win an Audi Q5

T-Mobile's marketing department has gotten all Ogilvy on us, and used its creative powers to come up with the 4G Pay Day game that involves $4000 daily giveaways, and the grand weekly prize of an Audi Q5.

As usual with these games, it is text-message based, and requires you to send the most answers to a trivia game within an hour you are capable of, and then hope the others didn't know as much, or were just slower.

What you need to do is text "Start" to 4444, and start watching your monthly bill mushroom to horizons you've never deemed possible, unless you got unlimited texting, of course, but then you still have to pay a dollar for each hint or skipping a question. Here are the simple rules:

Starting today, T-Mobile customers can text START to 4444 to review and accept the game rules and participate in the 4G PayDay mobile trivia contest. The game will consist of multiple-choice trivia questions delivered via text message.
The goal of the game is to correctly answer the most consecutive questions within an hour.
If players get stuck, they can choose to get a HINT to narrow their choices, or to SKIP that question to continue their winning streak and get a different question. (Both options are limited to three per game and cost $1.00 each plus tax).
The game ends with one incorrect answer or by reaching the one-hour time limit. Each player can participate in three games per day.
The player with the most consecutive correct answers in one game each day will win the daily $4,000 prize. The weekly Audi Q5 vehicle winner is determined by the most consecutive correct answers in a single game for the week. In the event of a tie, the most consecutive answers in the shortest amount of time will be declared the winner.

T-Mobile retail stores are starting to close

We've spent a lot of time talking about what will happen to our T-Mobile contracts, and the overall U.S. wireless market when the AT&T/T-Mobile deal is approved. But we've neglected to talk about what happens to the thousands of T-Mobile retailers and their employees. Apparently, many independent T-Mobile retailers are already throwing in the towel in anticipation of the acquisition.

One such retailer is Kirk Brundage, who owned 8 T-Mobile locations in Idaho and Utah. After he heard about the deal, he decided to sell his locations to an unnamed competitor, rather than wait for the hammer to drop. Brundage explains that there was "little hope for a dealer of [his] size".

This sentiment is rightly shared by many T-Mobile retail owners. AT&T has already promised to 'rationalize' their retail chains in order to make the acquisition more efficient. Combined, the two carriers have 9,200 retail locations, and given the waning performance of physical retail locations, that's way too many. Forty-one percent of AT&T stores are within one mile of a T-Mobile store. And those T-Mobile stores will probably be seen as redundant.

Even if retailers aren't cutting stores, they are at least shelving their expansion plans for the time being. Unfortunately, those retailers aren't allowed to discuss retail plans with AT&T, while the deal is still being reviewed. That adds particular uncertainty to the smaller retail owners, that will likely be overlooked by the Ma Bell giant.

Sprint offers discount in an attempt to get AT&T, T-Mobile enterprise customers to switch

Sprint is offering a new deal aimed at AT&T and T-Mobile's enterprise customers in certain states

Recently, Sprint was so interested in taking customers away from merger partners AT&T and T-Mobile, that they offered to pay the customer's $175 Early Termination Fee if they would switch while still under contract to either mobile operator. Now, a leaked photo of a Sprint internal document reveals that the nation's third largest carrier will send a mailer out to AT&T and T-Mobile enterprise customers, offering them a 12% discount, a deal on two phones and a $175 port-in credit.

According to the document, Sprint is aiming the mailer to business customers with 1-99 employees in Chicago, Miami, Colorado, Phoenix, Utah, Houston, Tampa, Minnesota, Kansas, East Michigan, Orange County, L.A. Metro, Orlando, New York City and Dallas/Ft. Worth. Those receiving the offer can pick up the recently launched Motorola XPRT, a BlackBerry-esque Android handset that is similar to the Motorola DROID Pro at Verizon, or the BlackBerry Style, a flip phone loaded with BlackBerry 6 OS and a WebKit browser. The BlackBerry Style is a free device with the offer, while the Motorola XPRT is discounted to $129.99 for those taking advantage of the deal.

The document says that the mailer will be sent out late this month, and that the deal is available through July 23rd. As we closer to government approval of AT&T's purchase of T-Mobile, the more desperate Sprint seems to get.

T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide shows up nice and clear in new photos

The last time we got a peek at the T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide in the beginning of this month, the pictures were about as sharp as a dull pencil. Today, we have a nice clear look at the device and we have to say that we like what we see. The 4 row landscape sliding QWERTY is well spaced and brings to mind the QWERTY on the HTC TouchPro2, still considered one of the best physical keyboards ever attached to a smartphone. When it comes to a physical QWERTY, HTC thinks of everything; the keyboard on the myTouch 4G Slide includes a dedicated '.com' button that, with the press of the alt key, becomes a dedicated 'www.' button.

An 8MP camera is on the back and there are no extra points awarded for guessing where the front-facing camera is. A 1.2GHz processor is under the hood. Besides the hardware, the T-Mobile my Touch4G Slide carries some potent software including Android 2.3.4 which means that gTalk is supported on the handset. Sense UI 3.0 is on top of Gingerbread.

The T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide is expected to be launched July 6th and might put some pressure on Verizon to push out the next generation Motorola DROID 3.

AT&T sees Q1 2012 approval for T-Mobile acquisition

Because of the size of the deal, AT&T's planned acquisition of T-Mobile for $39 billion must get approval from both the FTC and the Justice Department. Those who oppose or are in favor the deal had until Monday to register their opinion with both agencies. You can be sure that Sprint CEO Dan Hesse had a few choice words to pass along to the government as he has been the most vocal in the industry against the deal.

Now that the deadline to pass along an opinion has passed, AT&T says that it is on target to receive government approval to buy T-Mobile in the first quarter of 2012. AT&T has passed along a second set of data about the deal which was requested by the Justice Department. AT&T General Counsel Wayne Watts told reporters on Tuesday that the governmental agencies have been fair and thorough and that the review has been exactly what the carrier expected. He said, "Here we are the day after those comments are in, and I can tell you I have not been surprised by anything that has happened in that process."AT&T says that it needs to complete the deal to improve service to its customers. The carrier has promised its customers that it will offer next-gen 4G service to 97% of the U.S. population.

For its part, T-Mobile says that it needs to be acquired by a company with deep-pockets like AT&T because its parent company, Deutsche Telekom AG, is unable to keep making the investment necessary to handle T-Mobile customers' never ending increase in data usage. The major complaints against the deal focus on AT&T locking up additional spectrum by buying T-Mobile, and the resultant duopoly with Verizon that could be created when the nation's number one carrier swallows up number four. Sprint, the number three carrier in the U.S., is well behind Verizon in the number of subscribers it serves.

Watts refused to discuss what kind of conditions, if any, that the two agencies might place on AT&T to close the deal. AT&T, he said, is not worried about conditions. He says the company is focusing on getting the deal done.

T-Mobile reacts to latest FCC filings by opponents of the merger

It hasn't been a secret that Sprint is by far the biggest opponent of the proposed AT&T-T-Mobile merger. CEO Dan Hesse has basically done all he can to oppose and present arguments as to why the deal shouldn't get done, including an explanation of how AT&T could actually increase its network capacity without acquiring T-Mobile, the nation's fourth-largest carrier.

However, it seems T-Mobile's Tom Sugrue, the company's Vice President of Government Affairs, has decided to join the debate by issuing a comment on recent FCC filings. According to the official, opponents of the merger have thus far “failed to offer any credible arguments”, and have demonstrated a “head-in-the-sand insistence that no spectrum crisis exists”.

Obviously, Mr. Surgue believes that the sooner the deal gets approved and signed, the better. However, could Dan Hesse be hiding one last trick up his sleeve to change the course of things? If he has one, it better be good, we say.

T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide poses for a proper photo shoot

It was only a couple of weeks ago when the the upcoming myTouch 4G Slide for T-Mobile got caught in a couple of blurry shots. Today, we present you the yet unannounced QWERTY slider from HTC in its full splendor, leaving nothing to imagination (at least in terms of its looks).

It appears from the pictures, that the device has solid build quality. The keyboard looks like it will be a pleasure to use as well.

While the front of the smartphone is no different than the original myTouch 4G, save for the sliding keyboard, the back of the device is now a home for an 8 megapixel camera unit (1080p video recording is very likely to be available) with auto focus - a serious upgrade from the 5MP snapper of the original.

We already know that the T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide will ship with Android Gingerbread, dressed in a slightly modified version of HTC's latest Sense 3.0. Reportedly, the device is seriously fast but there is no conclusive information on its CPU (it might be a 1.2GHz, dual-core as in the HTC Sensation).

Now that we have the rumor circle which started with the leak of HTC Doubleshot back in April near its end, there is little left to do, but wait for an official announcement from T-Mobile and HTC. As always, we will keep you posted so stay tuned.

As we have reported, the phone will launch from T-Mobile on Wednesday at a price of $199.99 following a $50 mail-in-rebate and with a signed 2-year contract.

T-Mobile launches HSPA+ 42 in 47 more cities

Good news from T-Mobile seems so strange when we consider the AT&T buyout. What happens to these great network improvements? Oh well. We'll deal with that next year. In the meantime, let's enjoy the small victories:

T-Mobile has launched their 42Mbps HSPA+ service in 47 more markets. That brings their 42Mbps total to 102 cities. Unfortunately, those speeds can only be harnessed by the Rocket 3.0 USB modem.

But the Rocket 3.0 can reach some impressive speeds, with an average download rate of 10Mbps with peaks around 27Mbps. Here's the list of new cities on the HSPA+ 42 roster:

A press release from T-Mobile on Tuesday announced a special deal for this Saturday only, in honor of Sunday's Father's Day. New customers or those T-Mobile subscribers with 18 months of "contract tenure" are eligible to receive a free year of data. To receive the free data, you must purchase a qualifying unlimited talk, text and data plan, including 200MB of high-speed data, on a 2-year contract. T-Mobile will give each customer who qualifies $10 credit per month for the first year of the contract, a $120 value.

Those who subscribe to T-Mobile's other unlimited plans with 2GB, 5GB or 10GB high-speed data plans-none of which carry overage fees-will also receive 12 months with a $10 credit per month. Those who sign up for a 2 year contract for a mobile broadband plan also qualify for the $10 per month savings for 12 months. The promotion is available at T-Mobile's retail stores and online.

Speaking of T-Mobile's online operations, the carrier has a special deal for online buyers. Today only, order the Samsung Galaxy S 4G online from the nation's fourth largest carrier and the handset is free. Now until Thursday, you can order the myTouch 4G in black or white also for free.
