Huawei MediaPad: 7 inches of dual-core Honeycomb goodness

Huawei-mediapadlead

Well, would you look at that! It's the MediaPad, a 7-inch Honeycomb-running tablet from the folks over at Huawei. Obviously, this is a device we're going to be paying very close attention to in the Fall when it's to be released. It's important to note now, however, that the MediaPad is running Android 3.2, which Huawei says is built specifically for 7-inch tablets. So forget about all of that "10-inch screen for Honeycomb" junk.

Huawei really went all out with its MediaPad, giving the device some absolutely killer specs to keep up with the competition. On top of a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU from Qualcomm, the MediaPad touts a very high-resolution screen, a 5MP rear camera, a 1.3MP front camera, HDMI output, 802.11n connectivity, and 8GB of internal storage. There will also be versions with 3G, but no details about carrier partners have been revealed.

There is no doubt that the MediaPad is exactly what a lot of you are looking for. I'm pretty certain that it's a dream for some other Pocketables editors, as well. I can't wait to check it out later in the year.

Huawei Sonic delivers NFC functionality to the masses

With NFC being the latest trend in the evolution of the mobile phones, it is no secret that all major manufacturers are spending considerable resources to bring the technology to their latest and greatest high end devices. Huawei also jumped on the NFC wagon but in a rather extraordinary fashion - by implementing the feature in a device which costs the highly affordable €150.

Meet the Huawei Sonic, folks - one of the company's latest Android phones. Aside the NFC functionality, the device offers nothing memorable in terms of specs. This is not a surprise given its low price tag.

The Huawei Sonic runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Its UI has been slightly modified by its manufacturer to include a nice 3D-ish effect when switching between screens. The screen is 3.5" with VGA resolution. There is 256MB of RAM and 512MB of ROM on board. The memory can be expanded through a microSD card. There is a 3.2 megapixel camera with no flash on the back of the device. All this functionality comes in a nicely looking package which weighs only 120 grams. We found a hands-on video of the Huawei Sonic which you can see below:

The Huawei Sonic will hit the market soon as T20 from the Turkish mobile operator Turkcell. There is no information on availability outside of Turkey yet but, knowing Huawei's usual practices, we expect it to follow shortly.

Huawei M886 Glory runs Gingerbread on a 1.4GHz chip, coming to Cricket for $299

Huawei M886 Glory runs Gingerbread on a 1.4GHz chip, coming to Cricket for $299
Huawei partnering with Cricket Wireless might not sound like a team bringing earthshattering news, but for the budget-savvy consumer they just did – the Huawei M886 Glory is an Android handset running on a 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8655T chip all for the unmatched price tag of $299off contract. Did we mention the 4-inch screen with cream of the crop resolution of 480x854 pixels, adornished with an 8-megapixel auto-focus camera with flash and the promise for swift update to the upcoming Android Ice Cream Sandwich? Currently, the Huawei Glory runs Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread.

It's not only saving a buck as previously with Huawei, mostly known for the Ascend stateside, but now you get the respective performance as well. The Huawei Glory cracked the benchmarks scoring 60fps in the Neocore graphical test, but while its processor stretches a muscle, outside it looks humble with a plastic body. PCMag, who first got a hold of the device, reports that the material feels like “quality plastic,” with an interesting twist as the first white layer is used as base, then covered with a transparent one contributing to a 3D-like effect. At 0.38” (9.7mm) of thickness, the device is not the slimmest one out there, but not excessively thick either.

The phone is reported to be “very, very fast,” but that doesn't mean that you'd have to worry about battery life as Huawei has included a capable 1900mAh juicer. The Chinese company has done some slight improvements over the vanilla Gingerbread adding a cube-like 3D transitions in the home screen along with a custom music player, but the interface overlay isn't too heavy. The pictures below are of a pre-production unit, so there might be slight changes in the final one. Already excited? This is expected to hit shelves in late-2011, so you'll need to wait for a while, but in the meantime feel free to share your thoughts about Cricket's Huawei Glory in the comments below.

Huawei MediaPad can make you drip condiments on cute girls, that's what the ad says

Huawei MediaPad can make you drip condiments on cute girls, that's what the ad says
The Huawei MediaPad Android tablet will be announced June 20th, according to the countdown clock on the company's Facebook page. Also according to the picture on the page, it seems to be a 7"+ slate running Honeycomb - for the simple fact that there are no 7-inchers running Honeycomb yet, plus we have the Huawei IDEOS S7 already.

The back of the tab is in two tones - light and dark - while the front sports a black bezel. There is a rear camera of unknown resolution and obviously a headphone jack plus a few ports... that's all we can get about the tablet. Huawei is claiming it is "guaranteed to transform your entertainment experience" and, on Twitter, that the Mediapad is "HuaweiDevice's smartest, smallest and lightest tablet ever".

The fun part, however, starts with the first commercial for the Huawei MediaPad. We won't be spoiling the joy of watching this one, but just say that it involves a cute girl and a staple in the American diet going rogue. The marketing department evidently has been at the Computex 2011 expo while this video has been designed by the interns left in the office.

We'll have to wait on June 20th for more details about the Huawei MediaPad itself, but its first commercial has every chance to become a viral hit.
