AT&T confirms LG Thrill 4G pricing, release 'in the coming weeks'

LG Optimus 3D not getting any Gingerbread love until October

We have some good news and some bad news for the LG Optimus 3D owners out there. The sad bit is that their beloved smartphone won't be getting the Android 2.3 Gingerbread treatment for at least a few more months. On the positive side, the wait might just be worth it as it will improve the 3D capabilities of the device quite significantly.
The Inquirer reports that they managed to get some of the LG tech gurus to talk about the Optimus 3D Android 2.3 update release date and they said it will be coming in October. That might seem like a pretty long wait as by that time 10 months will have passed since the launch of Android Gingerbread, but there will be something to make up for it.
The LG Optimus 3D will be getting the usual bunch of features brought by Android 2.3 Gingerbread plus one key addition - it will be able to convert regular 2D application to 3D as long as the app relies on OpenGL for its graphics. So if you've always dreamt of adding an extra dimension to your favorite games or apps this might be your chance.
Now we are not sure how good the feature will work as converting 2D content to 3D automatically sounds pretty hard, but let's give LG a chance here. We'll see what happens in three months, when the update is actually released.

However, porting WP7 to the Optimus Black seems quite impossible as that one has a TI OMAP chipset, while WP7 only supports the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets. It would take an enormous amount of effort to bypass that limitation (if at all possible) and, frankly, we don't think anyone will bother.

The LG Optimus Black running WP7
That's why we believe that this here is one of the upcoming WP7 devices that should be announced this Fall. Considering how much we loved the Optimus Black exterior, we'd be pretty happy to see another version of it hit the market.
Of course, there's always the possibility that this is merely a WP7-skinned launcher, installed on the regular LG Optimus Black and its normal Android platform. There are plenty of launchers and skins on the Android Market, but we don't think we have seen one as elaborate as this. Plus, the source says it's genuine so we are really hoping they got that one right.

LG Optimus Pro and Optimus Net go official, €180/€200 respectively
From Italy (again) comes more news on the LG Optimus Pro - namely, it's official - and it brought a friend along, the LG Optimus Net. There are specs for both phones along with prices and launch dates and even demo videos. This info comes from AndroidWorld.it, there doesn’t seem to be an official press release from LG just yet.
The LG Optimus Pro features a 2.8" QVGA touchscreen (as we speculated yesterday) and a four-row portrait QWERTY keyboard. It runs Android 2.3.3 on a Qualcomm MSM7227T chipset (800MHz CPU, 256MB RAM).
Here's a video that takes us on a tour of the LG Optimus Pro (Note: audio is in Italian):
The LG Optimus Net on the other hand looks set to take the place of the highly popular Optimus One model. It has a 3.2" HVGA screen and uses an MSM7227T chipset too with 800MHz CPU but double the RAM, 512MB.
There's a video for the LG Optimus Net too (again, Italian audio):
Anyway, both the LG Optimus Net and the Optimus Pro feature 3MP cameras with VGA@24fps video recording, 3.6Mbps HSDPA, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and microSD card slots. Both use 1500mAh Li-Ion batteries.
The LG Optimus Pro will go for €180 with the release date listed as "2011-07-00", which we suppose is another way of saying "sometime in July". The LG Optimus Net will launch in July too for €200. Both phones come with 2GB microSD cards in the box.

LG Optimus 3D, Merekam Video 1080p @30 fps

LG Optimus 3D (Thrill 4G) Preview

Introduction:
The LG Optimus 3D, expected to arrive as the LG Thrill 4G for AT&T stateside, does one thing most other handsets can't do – glasses-free 3D on a 4.3-inch screen. But if you think that 3D is just a gimmick, the handset will not zealously try to convince you of the opposite as the feature is implemented very subtly so you can easily use the phone without it. The dual-core TI OMAP4430 chip paired with dual-channel memory makes the Optimus 3D one of the speediest handsets we've seen to date. Throw in full HD 2D video recording, and you get the main highlights of the Optimus 3D. It's not absolutely perfect, though, as it can be a bit too bulky for some and it comes with Android Froyo instead of Gingerbread.
Design:
The LG Optimus 3D has a hefty weight of 5.93 ounces (168 g) that you can instantly feel. It's not among the slimmest of phones either with 0.47 inches (11.9mm) of thickness, but while that might be a downer for some, it makes the phone feel solid in the hand. The 4.3-inch LCD screen with resolution of 480 x 800 pixels dominates the front and defines much of the handset's functionality. After all, it's among the first 3D parallax displays on a phone (the other is the HTC EVO 3D) allowing you to view 3D content glasses free. When in good ol' 2D mode, the screen has very good viewing angles, but a slightly disappointing direct sunlight legibility.
The LG Optimus 3D feels solid in the hand
You can compare the LG Optimus 3D with many other phones using our Size Visualization Tool.
But how does glasses-free 3D work? Holding the 3D button on the right is when the magic happens and the screen shows its parallax nature by feeding your eyes 3D images and videos which you can see without glasses. Basically, parallax means that you have an extra slit plate atop the standard screen, which blocks part of the picture for each eye, so you see a slightly different variation of the same image with each of the eyes. The tradeoff? You'll have to be willing to sacrifice quality as you only get to see half of the horizontal resolution.
The parallax display |
There is one key requirement for the whole magic to work – you have to look straight at the screen. Looking from the side, you'll only see shades and won't get a sense of depth, which means that only one person can enjoy the 3D view at a time. When gazing straight in, however, the screen unveils a very realistic 3D picture. Actually, the people who got to look at the Optimus 3D were impressed by the functionality and had lots of fun. But while the initial reaction is extremely positive, we have to mention that our eyes felt slightly tired after a couple of minutes. It all depends on the personal preference, though, if 3D is not the exact thing you're after, it seems likely that you'll find yourself playing with the feature only once in a while and mostly use the screen in the traditional 2D mode.
Taking your eyes off the screen, you'd notice that the LG Optimus 3D is actually made of plastic, but with a soft-touch coating on the back and a brushed metal-like finish up front it doesn't feel plasticky, which is a good thing. Below the screen there are four capacitive buttons reacting swiftly with haptic feedback, while an earspeaker, a proximity sensor and front-facing camera are above the display.

The back of the LG Optimus 3D
Finally, the phone looks big and solid, but very well built. The somewhat boring colors contribute further to its serious looks. If you don't mind that along with the thick profile of the device, you'd be rewarded with a phone ready to serve you with top notch functionality.

LG Optimus One gets updated to Android 2.3 Gingerbread... in Romania
People who have installed it report it is working fine, with the only issue being the proximity sensor now turns the screen back on at a larger distance when you finish the conversation.
The LG Optimus One has its versions on major US carriers, and turned out to be quite a popular budget Android handset, so hopefully the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update will be rolling to the New World sooner rather than later. Knowing the US carriers policies and restrictions when it comes to updating, though, LG will have more red tape to overcome on this side of the pond.

LG Machjet LPP6010N is the fastest printer yet

Everyone is obsessed with the need for speed – otherwise, how else do you explain the ever increasing speed found in your computer processor as well as higher frame rates in video games? Printers aren’t exempt from this technological rat race too, you know, with the LG Machjet LPP6010N laying claim to be the fastest A4 color desktop printer in the world. It will be made available later this month via authorized LG resellers and channel partners, so do keep a keen eye out if you’re interested in upgrading your office or home’s printer to the LG Machjet LPP6010N.
Printing technology has long been limited to laser and traditional inkjet systems, but the Machjet ushers in a totally new world of printing technology which makes it possible to deliver high-quality color printing at unbelievable speeds and quality. Thanks to Memjet’s ground-breaking, high-density page-wide printheads and components, these will allow enable printers to operate twice as fast while costing half of what it normally does to run traditional color office printers (on average, of course).
The Machjet will deliver high-quality color outputs in 1600 x 800 dpi resolution at 60 pages per minute, and thanks to Memjet’s proprietary Page Straight Array (PSA) Technology, it will manage to cram in over 70,000 ink nozzles on a single printhead — that makes it 17 times more the nozzle density compared to traditional printheads, which means the Machjet can offer over 700 million drops of ink per second on a page.
Printers that are “powered by Memjet” might be super fast, but that doesn’t mean they are going to burn a hole in your pocket because of electricity consumption. No sir, they are also energy efficient and less expensive to operate, consuming a mere 32W of juice when operating which makes it more power efficient compared to other laser printers that are out there in the market. With Machjet’s Hyper Small Drop Technology, operational costs are reduced further, letting the Machjet take advantage of smaller droplets to minimize the amount of ink required to render clean, crisp text and images at high speed.
Carphone Warehouse will be selling the LG Optimus 3D in the UK starting July 7

From the looks of it, Carphone Warehouse will be the exclusive retailer for the LG Optimus 3D in the UK – where pre-orders are now available for it. Thinking about picking this one up when it’s released? Well, you’ll be glad to know that it’s going to be available for free on plans starting at £35 per month. Indeed nice, potential owners will have huge smiles on their faces considering that it’s boasting a 3D capable display and dual-cameras for shooting 3D photos & videos.
Launching out of the gate with Android 2.2 Froyo on board, it’s positioned to be upgraded to Android 2.3 Gingerbread later on in the year – but let’s just hope it’s sooner than later. If you want to experience the whole 3D craze right away, you’d better circle down July 7 if you happen to live in the UK.

LG brings a dual-screen QWERTY droid like you've never seen
The Android-based LG phone you are about to see is a pretty standard smartphone until the moment you slide out the QWERTY keyboard. There you'll find another touchscreen right in the middle of it. Awkward, isn't it?
Ok, this is not the first dual-screen LG smartphone with strange design we meet. A few weeks ago we informed you about the US Cellular headed LG Genesis. As a comparison it had a rather uninspiring hardware, with even less useful second touchscreen (it could have been made as a slider, that way the second screen wouldn’t have been needed).
![]()
The mysterious LG dual-screen smartphone
Anyway, this fella here still has no name and was shown at an event held by Orange and Kineto Wireless in London. It was about Kineto's Smart WiFi solution and this LG handset was part of the demonstration.
The device has a big enough capacitive touchscreen (most probably WVGA) and a second touchscreen in the middle of the QWERTY keyboard. The guys over at Pocket-Lint had only a couple of minutes with the gadget and they couldn't find any other purpose of the second screen except the dedicated 8 shortcuts (two of them were customizable).

The mysterious LG handsets was a T-Mobile USA branded device and according to a previously leaked roadmap it might turn out to be FLIP II or Maxx Q.

LG Optimus 3D preview: First look, in stereo
A huge high-res screen, a new chipset expected to deliver beyond anyone's wildest hopes and 1080p video recording: the LG Optimus 3D sounds like a great package and we haven't even started yet. These are big ones no doubt, but not even close enough to making the headline. Not with a stereoscopic screen and a couple of 3D video-recording cameras at the back.

LG Optimus 3D official photos
The LG Optimus 3D is flagship stuff, head to toe. A premium package that doesn't need anything else to be complete. But whether it asked for it or not, the LG Optimus 3D might turn out to be the device of the season, on the shortlist of any self-respecting geek. Just look at those specs and you'll see what we mean.
This preview is based on a pre-production Optimus 3D unit and the functionality, software and performance could possibly differ in the final retail units.
LG Optimus 3D at a glance:
- General: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, UMTS 850/900/1900/2100 MHz, HSDPA 21 Mbps, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps;
- Form factor: Touchscreen bar phone;
- Dimensions: 128.8 x 68 x 11.9 mm, 168 g;
- Display: 4.3" 16M-color WVGA (480 x 800 pixels) TFT LCD stereoscopic touchscreen;
- CPU: Dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 proccessor, PowerVR SGX540 GPU, TI OMAP4430 chipset;
- RAM: 512MB, dual-channel;
- OS: Android 2.2 (Froyo);
- Memory: 8GB storage, microSD card slot;
- Camera: dual 5 MP, autofocus, LED flash with 1080p@24fps video recording; Stereoscopic 5 MP photos Stereoscopic 720p@30fps videos; geo-tagging face detection;
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth 3.0, standard microUSB port, microHDMI TV-out, GPS receiver with A-GPS, 3.5mm audio jack, stereo FM radio with RDS;
- Misc: DivX/XviD codec support, built-in accelerometer, multi-touch input, proximity sensor, gyroscope sensor, front facing camera, video-calls.
2010 was a year of disappointment for the LG mobile division, but they're looking to turn things around in 2011. Having beaten all the competition to bring the first dual-core smartphone to the market, LG is now racing to get to the 3D checkpoint ahead of HTC.
And the really cool part is that LG didn't rush through the rest of the development in favor of the stereoscopic screen and imaging on the Optimus 3D. Quite the opposite, the phone is touted as the first to feature dual-channel memory, thanks to the brand new TI OMAP 4430 chipset. The only sour note is Froyo. LG are obviously taking their time with Gingerbread and we're yet to see a single phone of theirs running it.

The rest does sound promising though and we cannot wait to see the 3D droid in action. So, without wasting any more time, the hardware inspection is due right after the break.
