We just got another glimpse of the upcoming first Nokia Windows Phone 7 smartphone. A brief video of the Nokia W9 Sea Ray surfaced, showing its Mango OS in action. The styling similarity to the MeeGo-running N9 is confirmed once again, but the virtual keys rumors were disproved.

Unlike last time, when Stephen Elop himself was to blame for the leak, we cannot identify the demonstrator this time. However, the video is reportedly taking place right next to the smartphone's assembly line, so it should be a Nokia employee again.

We are not going to speculate on whether Nokia themselves are intentionally releasing those video or if they are genuine leaks, because it hardly matters. Instead, we'll just let you enjoy the video.

As you can see the Nokia W9, codenamed Sea Ray, will be coming with the three usual WP7 hardware keys - back, menu and search. The controls on the right are a pretty standard affair, too - volume rocker, power key and a shutter button. Also, we noticed that the unit has a RTM version of Mango, which should be almost as good as the final deal.

Logic points at an announcement at Nokia World at the end of October, but seeing the progress the Finns have been making we are getting optimistic that it might come even sooner.

Nokia's first WP7 phone reportedly lacks any innovation

More rumors on the upcoming Nokia Windos Phone 7 smartphone just came in. The latest bit of online gossip has it that despite the long wait the Nokia W9 might not be as innovative as you would have hoped.

When Stephen Elop went on stage in February to talk about the switch to WP7, he said that the Nokia contribution to the platform will be worth billions, rather than millions. In fact word is Microsoft is going to pay them billions for choosing their mobile platform. But if Nokia's contribution is indeed to become so precious, they would need to bring plenty of innovation to the platform and make more people consider switching to it.

Nokia W9 Sea Ray

However, industry analyst Eldar Murtazin was quoted saying today that none of that will be happening with the Finish company's first WP7 smartphone. Reportedly, it will be packing the same chipset and screen as its competitors and it won't bring anything new on the software side.

The only novel part about the Nokia W9 (or whatever they decide to name it) will be the design. And as the first leaks show the design, too, will be almost identical to that of the MeeGo-powered N9.

Here's hoping that this doesn't end to be true as it would be a real shame. Plus, Nokia promised to introduce their Ovi Maps free navigation to WP7, so the bit about no software differences sounds rather odd.

1GHz S40 Nokia C3-01.5 pictures surface, is the first of many

Today we got lucky! A new unannounced S40 Nokia handset with a 1GHz processor and 512MB RAM broke loose and we got a few shots to show you. The Nokia C3-01.5 is the first S40 phone based on the new hardware platform, but it looks exactly as its C3-01 Touch and Type sibling.

Just a month ago we heard about a new wave of S40 handsets coming up. We also encountered an interesting rumor about a new S40 handset with a 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, a ClearBlack capacitive display and hardware QWERTY keyboard.

Nokia C3-01.5

The Nokia C3-01.5 that we meet with today (quite a name, right) is not the rumored handset, but it probably comes from the same lineup. It’s a refresh of the already familiar C3-01 Touch and Type with the notable improvement of a 1GHz processor and 512MB RAM. The rest of the specs should be the same.

According to a few leaked documents, the new models that Nokia has in the works are the C2-01.5 (RM722), C3-01.5 (RM-702), X2-01/X2-03 (RM-709), X3-02.5 (RM775 or RM-776) and the X2-01.1(RM-717). As you can see all these should be upgraded versions of some old fellas.

As the leaked pictures suggest, the retail names will probably stay the same. Nokia's product naming convention is obviously bound to get even more confusing.

We guess those S40 announcements should not be that far away in time. Nokia World in September, anyone?

More photos of Nokia 700 (Zeta) emerge, this time in white

Remember Nokia 700 (Zeta) which we exclusively showed you a week ago? Even more pictures of (allegedly) one of the first four 1GHz Symbian phones emerged today. This time however, the yet unannounced Finnish creation is dressed in the highly fashionable white color.

As you can see above, the photos are with significantly higher quality than the ones which we showed you last week. This could possibly mean that a launch of the Symbian Belle running, NFC capable smartphone might be nearing.

We must admit that the upcoming Nokia handset looks quite good in white. Sadly though, we don't know more about the specs of the device than we did a week ago.

As always, we will keep you posted on any new findings related to Nokia 700. In the meantime, you are welcome to tell us how do you like it in white in the comments section below.

Nokia E6 review: The E spirit

Introduction

Don't let your E71/72 smartphone read this. No, it won't have a heart attack or anything. But you don't want it suddenly feeling sad and useless. You certainly realize the E71/E72 duo is getting old and rusty. Like it or not, it's time to move on.

The Nokia E6 will not take No for an answer. A super crisp VGA touchscreen, the finessed Symbian Anna, the strong messenger bloodline and the stainless steel armor are a tempting combination. The package will make long-time Eseries users feel right at home and cheer the upgrades.

Nokia E6-00 Nokia E6-00 Nokia E6-00 Nokia E6-00
Nokia E6 official photos

Touchscreen or D-pad is not a decision you're forced to make. It will come naturally instead. Where the small screen won't allow the required level of touch precision, the D-pad will fill in. Five homescreen panes to fill with shortcuts and widgets will do better than the good old Active Standby with alternative setups for business and leisure.

Most importantly though, to even the most old-school of Eseries loyalists, touchscreen will be a fair price to pay for finally upping the screen resolution to acceptable levels.

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
  • Penta-band 3G with 10.2 Mbps HSDPA and 2 Mbps HSUPA
  • Symbian Anna OS
  • Messenger bar, stainless steel body, four-row QWERTY keyboard
  • 2.46" 16M-color capacitive TFT touchscreen of 640 x 480 pixel resolution; Gorilla glass protection
  • 680 MHz ARM 11 CPU and 256 MB RAM
  • 8GB internal storage, 1GB ROM, microSD card slot
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
  • GPS receiver with A-GPS support and free lifetime voice-guided navigation
  • Digital compass
  • 8 megapixel fixed-focus camera with dual-LED flash, 720p video recording @ 25fps; geotagging, face detection, smart zoom in video
  • Built-in accelerometer and proximity sensor
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Stereo FM Radio with RDS
  • microUSB port, USB-on-the-go
  • Flash and Java support for the web browser
  • Stereo Bluetooth 3.0
  • Smart dialing and voice commands
  • DivX, XviD and Matroska video support
  • Social network integration
  • Office document viewer and editor
  • Excellent battery life
  • Excellent audio quality

Main disadvantages

  • Symbian Anna is still catching up with Android and iOS
  • The tiny touchscreen has no room for big fingers
  • Fixed-focus camera
  • Relatively limited 3rd party software availability

This phone seems to have almost everything - well, save for HDMI and an actual life-size touchscreen. But we're talking Eseries and the E6 is the business. It feels like Nokia really wanted to rekindle the magic. The E6 makes the E72 look like a routine, cursory attempt at an update. Where the E72 wanted quietly keep on cashing in, the E6 is keen to make a difference. A tall task indeed, considering the times.

Nokia Pangkas Harga Smartphonenya Hingga 15%

Berbagai cara dilakukan Nokia demi mengatasi persaingan ketat di pasar smartphone. Pangsa pasar ponsel cerdas Nokia menurun sejak handset berbasis Android hadir.

Nokia pulls the plug on its U.S. and U.K. online stores

Nokia pulls the plug on its U.S. and U.K. online stores
After closing down permanently many of its Internet stores across Europe, including the ones in Spain, France, and even its home, Finland, Nokia has officially pulled the plug on two more of its online shops – the ones that served the U.S. and the U.K. At this time, the only Nokia online stores that seem to be still operational are the ones in Portugal, China, and in a few South American countries. Fortunately, Amazon Wireless and many other online retailers are always open for business so the loss of the company’s Internet stores is not that tragic after all.

Shutting down its Internet outlets is actually a part of Nokia’s plan to shift its focus away from offering handsets directly to end customers and start selling more devices to wireless carriers instead. The big question is how interested wireless carriers will be in distributing the company’s handsets and how much attention these handsets will get from the market. Those of you who have been keeping an eye on things probably know that Nokia has not been doing very well recently and its market value is dropping steadily. Will the Nokia N9 or the manufacturer’s windows phone devices manage to bring the company back to its feet?

Nokia N9 Hands-on

Nokia N9 Hands-on
Nokia fans around the world, we feel sorry for you right now. With Symbian Anna, Windows Phone and MeeGo all spread across different upcoming handsets, working out which camp to pitch tent is no easy feat. Until a few weeks ago, it was all very simple, 'Symbian out, Windows Phone in, MeeGo who?', but that was until Nokia decided to let their N9 shaped cat out of the bag. The Nokia N9 sports MeeGo 1.2 aboard a sleek, mainstream physiques, coupling high grade build quality and a one-hand centric touch UI. Under the hood sits a 1GHz processor with a 3.9” AMOLED display, not to mention an 8MP Carl Zeiss camera with a dual LED flash. Playing with a prototype earlier today, we were in gadget heaven for a full 15 minutes, dampened only by the lack of information surrounding the release of this surprise contestant in the mobile OS race.

Slick, simple, sexy, the Nokia N9 has ‘it’, that x-factor that lets you know, this is cool. With visual flourishes kept to a minimum, the beauty is in the detail, or lack there-of. The matte, high-grade plastic feels robust and is coloured, not painted, so can’t be chipped to reveal white. The convex bevelled display also adds subtle tactility while the lack of buttons just entices you to touch, stroke and swipe.

With an anti-glare Gorilla glass AMOLED display and a resolution of 480x854 pixels, Nokia has added a new screen resolution to its repertoire, and while it won’t blow minds, it’s a solid benchmark to start on. The UI’s use of black coupled with the AMOLED display also turns the aesthetics into a fluid rippling puddle of interactivity in contrast to the jarring staggered visuals Symbian became renowned for.

The Nokia N9 goes easy on the buttons, with none on the fascia and the right side housing a power / unlock button as well as the volume keys. A headphone jack and micro SIM card slot sit on the top end while the speaker lies below. Similarly minimalistic, a metallic strip accents the 8MP camera on the reverse with a dual LED flash sitting quietly to the right.

As far as the UI goes, there are three main screens: notifications, all apps and open apps. These can be swiped through left to right or vice versa. Black is used entirely throughout the UI in the background taking full advantage of the display, so with the simplistic design and panoramic take on menu systems, the Windows Phone 7 influence is undeniable.

Either press the unlock button on the side or double-tap on the display to light up the screen, partially unlocking it. To finish the job, simply swipe across the now lit up display for full access. If you have any notifications, you can access them directly from the lock screen. The notifications page is super straightforward, clean and simple. The apps drawer displays four columns of free scrolling applications. These can be rearranged with a long press and can also consist of shortcuts to things like websites, stripping things right back to a single menu to rule them all. Swiping to the multi-tasking pane and your open apps are displayed in a 3x3 format, pinch in and this zooms in on apps resulting in a 2x2 view. A single tap takes you to the app while a long press lets you close one app or all.

When an app is opened, just swipe it left to send it to the multi-tasking pane, swipe it right to close it altogether. If you’re worried about accidentally closing apps, Nokia have designed the UI so it only registers a swipe if it starts from the extreme left or right. What’s nice is that you can partially swipe apps out, so if you start to swipe, then change your mind, just drag your finger back to reinstate your app to the forefront of the Nokia N9’s attention.

Support for accounts includes all your standard mail clients as well as Facebook and Twitter. There’s also a fully functioning voice guided turn-by-turn GPS that uses OVI Maps as well as everything else you’d come to expect from a modern day smart-phone.

Nokia N9 Hands-on

An interesting point is that this handset doesn’t like to be in landscape. In fact, it actively encourages one-handed usage. Even Nokia’s music app, which once switched into coverflow when flipped to landscape, now remains in portrait when the phone is rotated, bypassing some eye-candy but directing the user experience more cohesively at the same time.

Nokia N9 Hands-on

The music player

The camera app is also an evolution. Adopting touch to focus with an array of scenes and manual overrides such as brightness, contrast, ISO etc. The Nokia N9 takes pictures at 8MP / 8MP wide with a sensor designed with wide photos in mind. While it doesn’t have all the mega pixels of the N8 and the physical sensor size is smaller, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, with the lens and sensor seeming to produce good quality, comparable shots. It also shoots video at 30fps 720p. The model we used is a prototype and so shouldn’t be judged as final, though we were impressed on the whole.

With in excess of fifteen apps multi-tasking, we didn’t see any slowdown on the Nokia N9, even when playing video and browsing the web. Performance therefore seems to be great off the bat. It will be interesting to see how the phone's 1GHz processor copes when a range of 3rd party applications are installed and live updates are occurring in the background.

So there you have it, a brief run down of the killer aspects of this new MeeGo handset, the Nokia N9. We love it at first glance, feel and play. Unfortunately though, it ticks the same boxes as Windows Phone 7 acting as whole new OS proposition when Nokia have already committed to another. With the hardware looking identical to the leaked Sea Ray, we’re worried releasing both devices side by side would confuse and fragment Nokia users across app stores, OSs and user experiences. With Stephen Elop’s explicit focus on Windows Phone as the future of Nokia therefore, we can’t help but curb our enthusiasm for the future of MeeGo, no matter how intriguing the Nokia N9 is. Check out the video run throughs for an in-depth look at the OS and stay tuned to PhoneArena for a full review in the coming months.

Lengthy video demoes the ins and outs of MeeGo Harmattan on the Nokia N950

Lengthy video demoes the ins and outs of MeeGo Harmattan on the Nokia N950
The MeeGo flavor that is on the Nokia N9 gets extensively previewed in an 18-minute clip, running on the developers' dream Nokia N950, with its physical slide-out QWERTY.

This should make your choice whether to get the Nokia N9 or not easier, since, besides every nook and cranny of the interface, the video shows the operation of Nokia Maps, and most of the default apps that are coming with the handset.

Big focus is given to the camera interface, which is not surprising, considering that the FCC dismantle revealed we have a 12MP shooter with Carl Zeiss optics (nudge, wink, Nokia N8) in the N950 development platform.

The video is in Thai, since that's where the presenter is from, and the quality is not stellar, but if you are in the market for a Nokia N9, which hasn't been launched yet, you won't let these small quirks bother you.

Nokia N9 to miss on some major markets

he Nokia N9 certainly made a great first impression and a lot of people are eager to get their hands on it. That's why Nokia put up a webpage, that should help you find out when the device becomes available in your area. Interestingly though, the Finns seems to have no plans of releasing the N9 in some of the biggest markets in the world. Some of the countries, which will surprisingly miss on the MeeGo smartphone are USA, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Canada etc.

Incidentally those countries are the ones rumored to be in the first wave to get the Nokia first WP7-powered device - the Sea Ray. It seems that Nokia doesn't want its two flagships competing against each other.

You can check out this link to see if your country will be getting some MeeGo love from Nokia or not. And don't forget that even if it's not you can always import the handset from elsewhere (though that will probably result in a price increase).

Stay tuned, we'll update accordingly if there are any new additions to the list.

And feel free to check out our Nokia N9 preview for some more first-hand impressions of the device.

Nokia keeps MeeGo alive with the sleek N9 smartphone

Nokia_n9_front Nokia faithful and Linux fans, rejoice. Despite Nokia's recent deal with Microsoft that made WP7 their primary operating system, the has-been manufacturer just released a powerful and sleek smartphone that doesn't use Microsoft's OS.

The device, called the N9, certainly has pretty hardware. It follows the common "keyboardless bar" design, but a decision to forgo buttons on the front of the device, capacitive or otherwise, makes it more unique. Power, volume, and camera buttons are still included on the side of the devices. It remains to be seen how well this will work out in actual use, but it certainly looks sleek.

Good looks are not the only thing the N9 brings to the table, it also boasts a somewhat impressive spec sheet. Behind the 3.9-inch 854 x 480 AMOLED display, you will find a 1GHz TI processor, 1GB of RAM, SGX 530 graphics, and a 1450 mAh battery. The N9 also has dual cameras (8MP and 1MP) along with WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0.

If this were an Android or Windows Phone 7 device, it would not be big news. Its hardware is sleek, but it is not a powerful dual core or a fancy new 3D phone. What makes this phone special is that it is the first commercial MeeGo device.

MeeGo, the result of collaboration between Intel and Nokia, is a Linux-based OS made for running on smartphones. Nokia had plans to make MeeGo hardware, but many thought they were abandoned after the company's deal with Microsoft. Obviously, the plans were not abandoned. However, there are still important questions about this new OS. Will Nokia support it? Will there be another device with MeeGo, or is this the end? Can MeeGo really compete with iOS and Android? I fear the answer to most of these questions is no, but I still have some hope the MeeGo platform may take off.

Nokia WP7 device to be really awesome, supposedly

Nokia-wp7

It's been a little while since the partnership between Nokia and Microsoft took place. And even then, there was no mention of specific pieces of hardware. All we knew at the time was that a device was coming in the first half of 2012.

But maybe we won't have to wait quite as long anymore. Dave Trevaskus, a Senior Training Consultant for the manufacturer, recently tweeted that the Nokia Windows Phone could potentially threaten the continuing existence of socks on our feet. 2011 is only halfway done, and if a device is worthy of stripping off your clothing, then it's probably close to being all ready to go for consumers.

To be honest, Windows Phone 7 is a fantastic operating system with just a few bugs. On top of the bugs, though, are some absolutely horrid hardware designs and decisions on Microsoft's partners' parts. Nokia, in my opinion, has absolutely beautiful designs and great hardware. WP7's Mango update being combined with Nokia's hardware has to be an incredible win for Windows Phone fans.
