Unnamed Samsung Android slider headed for AT&T

If Samsung’s Android lineup is feeling a little sparse on AT&T, don’t worry… there’s about to be a new flagship in town. We have just exclusively received a photo of an unnamed Samsung device complete with sliding QWERTY keyboard that’s headed to AT&T in the coming months. While we don’t have much to go on, the device will sport the four-button Android layout as opposed to Samsung’s typical three-button layout at AT&T’s request, and the QWERTY keyboard even reflects that.

Samsung Berkemungkinan Lampaui Apple dan Nokia di Kancah Penjualan Smartphone?

Ilustrasi

Samsung Android Phones May Have Surpassed Apple’s iPhone In Smartphone Sales [REPORT]

According to an analyst, Samsung might have surpassed Apple in smartphone sales this past quarter as Android becomes more accepted among customers. While no exact numbers are known yet, such an achievement would be a victory for Samsung, Google and Android enthusiasts alike.

iPhone Galaxy S II

According to Neil Mawston, a London-based analyst working for a Boston-based research company known as Strategy Analytics, Samsung is expected to have sold between 18 and 21 million smartphones in the second quarter, as opposed to Nokia’s 16.7 million and Apple’s 20.3 million. The three makers are in a really close race, although Nokia is on the decline while both Android and the iPhone are growing.

This new prediction is due to the fact that Samsung’s Android devices have been selling very aggressively in some regions, according to Mawston:

Samsung's Android portfolio is selling strongly in most regions. [...] Samsung and Apple will be at similar levels in smartphones by the end of the year.

This is not the first sign of Samsung’s overwhelming success with its Android-powered devices. Earlier this month, Samsung announced it had sold 3 million Galaxy S II’s, when the phone had become the fastest-selling smartphone in the UK after positive reviews. Shortly after the phone’s launch, it was also reported that it had been a runaway success in Korea, having outsold the iPhone in the first few days after its launch.

The Galaxy S II is Samsung’s third-generation Samsung Android smartphone. The device, which began gradually shipping to all countries in the world a few months back, features high-end hardware specifications, including a 1.2 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel camera. The device isn’t officially available in the US through a carrier as of yet, although speculation indicates that the release date might be set to next month.

Samsung’s Android strategy isn’t limited to smartphones, however. The South Korean company also sells the Galaxy Tab, a 10.1-inch tablet that runs Honeycomb, a version of Android with a user interface designed specifically for tablets.

Just like any analyst prediction and estimates, this one should be taken with a grain of salt. Samsung hasn’t disclosed the real sales numbers for the Galaxy S II, therefore not much can be said about its performance. Nonetheless, it’s becoming clear that an increased amount of users are choosing the Android platform.

CyanogenMod 7 shown running on Galaxy S II, you can’t have it yet

Remember those Galaxy S II smartphones that Samsung so generously donated to the CyanogenMod Team for developing custom ROMs for the device? Well, that gesture wasn’t in vain as the devs have been hard at work and we can now see the fruits of their hard work.

gsmarena 001 CyanogenMod 7 shown running on Galaxy S II, you cant have it yet

Below you can see the Galaxy S II running on the CyanogenMod 7 along with LauncherPro. Unfortunately, it is still a work in progress and few things aren’t working quite well as of now but the team is working on them and hopefully should release it soon for users to download. Head past the break to check out the video.

Now you too can grab the leaked Bada 2.0.1 firmware for the Samsung Wave II [VIDEO]

We’ve already seen Bada 2.0.1 in screenshots and on video, but now you can try it too – if you have a Samsung S8530 Wave II and you’re willing to install an unfinished firmware on it, that is.

gsmarena 000 Now you too can grab the leaked Bada 2.0.1 firmware for the Samsung Wave II [VIDEO]

There are quite a few people already who have given it a spin and they’ve shot quite a few videos showing the new version of Bada. If you decide to join them, you should know that the firmware is old (April) and has its bugs.

Here’s how you can get Bada 2.0.1 running on Wave II (nope, other models are not supported): you can grab the firmware from here (220MB) and you’ll need to use Multiloader 5.65.

Reports indicate that while the firmware is far from complete, it works well enough. The Dolphin browser is sluggish but it has received text reflow and the browser bar is fixed to the top of the screen. Apps from Bada 1.2 work on the new version but only the preinstalled widgets work. The video recorder is reportedly broken and text to speech is disabled (though speech to text works). If your Wave II restarts often after you flash it, you can try to set the debug level to low.

Here’s a bunch of screenshots to give you a taste of Bada 2.0.1:

Anyway, you can go over this topic and check responses from people who have flashed their Samsung Wave II phones with Bada 2.0.1. The first post in the topic has a long list of video demos too, but they are all extra blurry, so we’ll
list only the least blurry one here:

If you decide to take the chance (again, the firmware is unofficial and unfinished) and install Bada 2.0.1, drop us a line in the comment section – we’d love to hear your impressions from it.

Thanks to Daium for the tip!

Smart cover copycats for Galaxy Tab 10.1 causes a stir, Samsung claims it didn’t approve them and had them taken down

Have a look at the picture below – what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Yep, everyone else thought “smart cover”, too. Except for Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets. I can’t imagine this will help the lawsuit.

gsmarena 001 Smart cover copycats for Galaxy Tab 10.1 causes a stir, Samsung claims it didnt approve them and had them taken down

Now, the smart covers (called “Smart Case”) aren’t manufactured by Samsung (they’re made by another Korean company, Anymode), but they apparently have a close connection. Anymode is a key supplier of accessories for Samsung and the rumor mill is eager to point out that Anymode’s CEO is a nephew of Samsung’s chairman.

Samsung’s response was quick – they had Anymode pull down the product page before any Smart Cases were sold and say they never certified the product (despite reports to the contrary). Even so, the damage has been done – I’m sure plenty of people we’ll be quoting these “Smart Cases” as evidence that Samsung does copy everything from Apple, regardless of whether or not they had anything to do with creating the product.

More details on the Galaxy S II for AT&T surface, Attain name to be dropped

We just got a portion of Galaxy S II news for our American droid-loving friends. One of our readers managed to squeeze a few details about the arrival of the coveted smartphone to the AT&T network from a representative of the carrier.

gsmarena 001 More details on the Galaxy S II for AT&T surface, Attain name to be dropped

Apparently, the handset will keep its Galaxy S II name, instead of being called Attain as previously rumored. It should appear on the carrier shelves in late Summer or early Fall, with the date 1 September repeatedly mentioned in the conversation. That would put the AT&T Galaxy S II in direct competition against the next iPhone, which is supposed to appear at about the same time.

And just like with the Galaxy S before it, the Galaxy S II will be getting a facelift before hitting AT&T. There’s no saying how deep the hardware difference will run, but the exterior will certainly change.

Of course, none of this information has been officially confirmed, so take it with a pinch of salt. Yet, it does seem plausible as retaining the international name for the carrier-specific versions will help Samsung solidify its brand in the US, which is high on the company priority list.

Samsung working on a WP7 version of the Galaxy S II?

After sparking a furor in the Android world with its I9100 Galaxy S II flagship Samsung is obviously considering lending the form factor to another platform. A particularly juicy rumor has it that we will be seeing the ultra-powerful hardware run the latest edition of Microsoft's WP7, Mango.

The suspicion comes from a Bluetooth SIG certificate, issued to one Samsung i937. Seeing the profile of the smartphone it's obvious that it’s a WP7 device and plus the name has already surfaced through Occasional Gamers list of Windows Phone 7 handsets.

Now the bit where it shares the Galaxy S II hardware isn't as certain. It is based on the fact that the model name (SGH-i937) is really close to that of the US version of the Samsung Galaxy S II (SGH-i927). Well that and the fact that we would really love to see the super slim body and huge Super AMOLED Plus screen be available in as many forms as possible.

Of course a move to Windows Phone would also require the Galaxy S II chipset to be replaced with a Qualcomm Snapdragon, but those are quite capable too so it's no biggie.

Let's hope that Samsung doesn't leave us in the dark for much longer and unveils their upcoming WP7 smartphone soon. With the Mango update more or less bringing the Microsoft platform up to speed with its Android and iOS competitors, there'll be plenty of people waiting for some hot hardware to be announced to make the jump.

Samsung Within for Sprint gets spotted in the wild

There is hardly any doubt that the Samsung Galaxy S2 is the king of droids so far this year. Logically, its official arrival in United States is highly anticipated. It looks however, that the wait might soon be over for the folks across the Atlantic. The Sprint Wireless version of the device, dubbed Samsung Within just got caught in a couple of blurry shots.

As you can see from the picture, the device is slightly curvier than the Galaxy S2 which we have come to know so well. The textured back however, appears to remain the same like its rest of the world sibling.

There is no information on a release date or specs, save for the fact that the device will come with Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread out of the box.

All in all, it appears that the Sprint branded HTC EVO 3D, which we previewed for you a couple of days ago, is bound to get some Super AMOLED Plus competition from within its own ranks very soon.

The Samsung Conquer 4G for Sprint is now official, keeping wallets fat in the U.S.

The Samsung Conquer 4G for Sprint is now official, keeping wallets fat in the U.S.
Sprint and Samsung have officially introduced the Samsung Conquer 4G, a mid-range phone with specs that would have been considered top of the line not too long ago. As we recently reported, the Android device is expected to be launched on July 24th with a 1GHz single-core processor under the hood. You know, the kind of chip set that was powering some top of the line models only a few months ago.

Having Android 2.3 under the hood is not your typical mid-range manufacturing move, but then again, neither is having the phone equipped with a 1.3MP front-facing camera and 4G connectivity via WiMAX. Some of the specs, though, are genuinely low to mid-level such as the 3.2MP rear camera and the 3.5 inch screen with HVGA resolution.

With Sprint taking care of the high-end with the recent launch of the HTC EVO 3D, the carrier wanted to go after that forgotten middle of the market-too rich to consider cheap handsets with low end specs, but too poor to chase the latest dual-core packin', Super AMOLED (or LCD, take you pick) high-res display equipped beast. The Samsung Conquer 4G sounds like this is the model for them, although pricing has yet to be revealed.
